State housing agency, Governor’s Homeownership Month proclamation promote, support affordable homeownership

(AUSTIN) — The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) this week joined Governor Rick Perry in recognizing June as Homeownership Month as an opportunity to remind residents that the state housing agency offers a wide spectrum of programs that support homeownership beyond the initial home purchase.

In his proclamation, the Governor saluted those who work to achieve and maintain affordable, responsible homeownership as well as those who provide resources to homebuyers and homeowners.

“Homeownership is an important part of our way of life in Texas, embodying our core values of individuality, responsibility and self-reliance,” said Governor Perry in his declaration. “I encourage all Texans to explore the numerous homeownership resources available, as the steps you take today can make a difference in yourself, your family, and the great State of Texas.”

“The Department echoes Governor Perry’s comments and wants all Texans to remember that our goal is not simply to help families buy a home,” said TDHCA Executive Director Tim Irvine. “We offer a number of programs that help lower income homeowners keep their homes safe and affordable.”

Since 1980, TDHCA has worked in partnership with private lenders, cities, counties, and eligible nonprofit organizations to support homeowners through a range of services: from mortgage loans and down payment and closing cost assistance to home rehabilitation, reconstruction, or replacement; to weatherization, which helps increase home energy efficiency; to home modifications that enhance accessibility and safety for persons with disabilities.

The Department encourages lower income Texas households to visit TDHCA’s Web site at www.tdhca.state.tx.us and click the “Help for Texans” tab to find local assistance to keep their home affordable.
